Dr. Julio Bragagnolo
Consultant Solarvalue AGDr. Bragagnolo is an expert in the photovoltaic industry, with experience ranging from R&D to manufacturing and marketing of thin film and crystalline silicon products, as well as manufacturing equipment. Through a contact with the University of Maribor, Slovenia, Dr. Bragagnolo learned of a unique opportunity to enhance the silicon made in Ruse to meet the industry’s needs for solar grade silicon. The project needed a ‘technology holder’ to make it happen. “So I was pleased to accept this challenge”, says Dr. Bragagnolo. “In addition, I hoped to win John Mott’s collaboration as a team member, so we could have his silicon manufacturing expertise for Solarvalue.
This is how John Mott and I met again after 20 years. We worked at the Solarex Corporation in the eighties. John constructed an arc furnace which back then, was the most sophisticated existing silicon metal furnace worldwide, while my job was to make the best possible solar cells from a number of silicon materials then under development. We believed in the future of using the metallurgical process for manufacturing solar grade silicon, but the economic production scale needed would have lead to a large surplus. Therefore, this line of development was not pursued and the industry continued to rely on the known sources made by the Siemens process.”
Today, the world looks different: For the first time in the year 2006, the solar cell industry used more electronic grade silicon to produce solar cells than the semiconductor industry. The availability of solar grade silicon is a major limiting factor for the whole solar industry. “Solarvalue will contribute to breaking this limitation by developing our own production of solar grade silicon, supplying high quality material to solar cells manufacturers and moving from there to the entire value chain.”
