Forum Solarpraxis in Berlin. The conference was well attended. Dr. Julio Bragagnolo, CTO of Solarvalue, provided a detailed insight on the major achievements regarding refinement of metallurgical grade silicon [MG] into solar grade silicon [SGS], particularly the phosphorous and boron reduction process. Among others, the three technical charts included in the presentation underline the following: 1. The phosphorous reduction process is very stable and achieves our initial target level of 2 ppmw (parts per million by weight). This level has been shown by major photovoltaic industry users to produce good quality solar cells. 2. In addition, the solar experts headed by John Mott and Dr. Julio Bragagnolo have demonstrated that the proposed process successfully reduces the boron content in MG silicon. A reduction to approximately 40 percent of the initial concentration was shown. However, because not all the key elements of the production technology were available at the time of construction, the existing furnace does not have the features necessary to achieve the target boron level. As these features are now available, Solarvalue and its strategic partner MoserBaer have decided to build a new test furnace, including all elements needed to achieve the target boron level.
